When we were kids, t<\/span>alking about <\/span>\u201cstranger danger\u201d <\/span>was <\/span>as<\/span> simple <\/span>as “<\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span> accept candy from strangers”<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The world has changed. Statistics show that the cases of child <\/span>abductions<\/span> by strangers are relatively rare, rather children are harmed by those known (or at least familiar) to them. There is also a school of thought that suggests developing a fear of strangers in children stops them from developing skills needed to navigate life effectively. And finally some think talking \u201cstranger danger\u201d <\/span>simply <\/span>frightens kids<\/span> unnecessarily<\/span>.\"Untitled<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Recognising these good arguments, we suggest it still important to work with your kids on the basics of engaging safely with the world outside of their <\/span>home<\/span>. The difference today is that the topic is likely to me more <\/span>nuanced<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the basics follow:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

—> Safety in Numbers <\/a><\/span>\u00a0– Encourage your kid to be a \u201cloaner\u201d<\/span> in<\/span> the safety of your own home. When out in the world, they should play with others. <\/span><\/p>\n

—> Confidence to Say No \u2013 <\/span>Teach your children how to be assertive and respectful of adults at the same time. <\/span><\/p>\n

—> Don\u2019t advertise<\/span> \u2013 Monograms are fun and labelling is <\/span>just sensible but try to <\/span>keep <\/span>your kids names in discrete<\/span> places.<\/span><\/p>\n

—> Safe Places and Action Plans<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>Give your kids tips about who and where is safe and develop action plans in case you get separated.<\/span><\/p>\n

—> F<\/span>amily Passwords \u2013<\/span> Some families have a secret password for cases when someone other than Mom or Dad or Nanny is picking up kids.<\/span><\/p>\n

—> G<\/span>ut instincts <\/span>\u2013<\/span> <\/span>Teach your kids to trust their instincts. This is a skill that will serve them well throughout life. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are a lot of good resources online on how to talk to your kids about this topic.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

And please do not forget to consider the virtual world as well as the physical world. <\/span>Set rules for using the internet, including talking with strangers. <\/span><\/p>\n
