So you think you are up on social media? You <\/span>have heard about<\/span> and may even use<\/span> Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, \"child<\/a>Tumblr, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Vine. <\/span><\/p>\n

But do you know the other social media sites and applications kids are using? Heard of Whisper, <\/span>Yik<\/span> Yak, Burn Note, <\/span>ooVoo<\/span> and <\/span>Kik<\/span> Messenger?<\/span> <\/span>That\u2019s right! <\/span>There are more and more outlets every day that enable us (and particularly teens) to communicate <\/span>in new ways<\/span>. <\/span>Wikipedia\u2019s alphabetical listing of social networking sites<\/span><\/a> passes 50 in number by the time it gets to F, as in Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

[A cheat sheet is<\/span> included at the bottom for anyone scratching their heads right now!]<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology and social media in particular opens up new ways for you to stay connected to your home \u2013 i.<\/span>e. your kids and babysitter or n<\/span>anny \u2013 that did not exist previously. That is wonderful!<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u2026<\/span> You need to <\/span>be clear about the rules of the road<\/span><\/a> for its use. This should absolutely be one of the things to discuss in very clear terms <\/span>and even better, document on your<\/span> babysitter board or its equivalent. <\/span><\/p>\n

And the first thing you should do is find out what s<\/span>ocial media your babysitter or n<\/span>anny uses. Don\u2019t be shy! Life is busy and social media moves fast. Find out what they are using and then how it is used. Then decide what you are comfortable using for communicating with each other or more widely. <\/span><\/p>\n

Next, <\/span>set the rules for what <\/span>is okay for your babysitter or n<\/span>anny to post<\/span><\/a> that includes your kids. You want to consider whether you are comfortable with your kids\u2019 image, name, location or situation (i.e. home without parents) being online. If you are comfortable with some combination of the above, ensure that you are notified of posts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Agree <\/span>what types of communication you want to have whilst you are away<\/span><\/a>. Do you want those super cute moments captured and texted to you? Do you want a live stream of how activities are going (homework done, veggies eaten, teeth brushed, good night routine)? Set rules<\/a> for taking images and photos of your kids away on their devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

One word of warning \u2013 be s<\/span>ensible: if your babysitter or n<\/span>anny is texting you every 5 minutes how is she or he paying attention to the kids? And what are you getting done? <\/span> Also have clear rules on when devices should be down \u2013 like when driving or watching the kids on the playground or in the pool.<\/span><\/p>\n

And don\u2019t forget your children. Kids today are glued <\/span>to <\/span>th<\/span>eir devices. Talk frankly with your nanny or babysitter <\/a><\/span>about what apps and sites are allowed and when devices need to be put away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally: Here is a quick run-down if you DID NOT know any of the social media sites we mentioned:<\/span><\/p>\n

Twitter \u2013 140 character microblogs called tweets<\/span><\/p>\n

Instagram \u2013 app for positing pictures and short videos, both publicly and to private networks<\/span><\/p>\n

Tumblr \u2013 short streaming blogs (<\/span>tumblogs<\/span>) including text, audio, video and photos<\/span><\/p>\n

Snapchat \u2013 app for messaging (including pictures and videos) that disappear after a set period of time; note that this is increasingly becoming a standard means of communications for kids today<\/span><\/p>\n

WhatsApp \u2013 app to send text, audio, photos and images directly to one person or a group<\/span><\/p>\n

Vine \u2013 app for posting short videos<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Whisper \u2013 app for putting out messages (that are paired with an image) anonymously<\/span><\/p>\n

Yik<\/span> Yak \u2013 short messaging app that is accessible to the 500 closest users<\/span><\/p>\n

Burn Note \u2013 app for messaging (text only) that deletes messages after a set period<\/span><\/p>\n

ooVoo<\/span> \u2013 app for messaging, voice and video, including a group chat function<\/span><\/p>\n

Kik<\/span> Messenger \u2013 app that lets you text for free <\/span><\/p>\n

Facebook \u2013 if y<\/span>ou do not know this one, well..<\/span>.more than 1.5 billion people on earth are using it so worth checking it out to be a little more current!<\/span><\/p>\n
