I remember well Hallowe\u2019en night in my first house. I had a dinner party and all conversation stopped as we started to hear the sound of kids running through the leaves (swish, swish, swish) and the knocking at the door. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enthusiastic shouts of \u2018Trick or Treat\u2019 from ghosts and goblins brought smiles to everyone\u2019s face and we equally enthusiastically took turns answering the door and handing out pieces of <a title=\"Pull off the Greatest Trick of all this #Halloween by Introducing NEW Treats!\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.sosgarde.ca\/blog\/pull-off-the-greatest-trick-of-all-this-halloween-by-introducing-new-treats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candy<\/a> from the big pumpkin bowl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the hour grew late and the stream of trick or treaters slowed, the group conversation resumed and many around the table admitted that they were glad that costumes had not been required for my gathering. Last minute and \u2018Do It Yourself\u2019 Halloween costume horror stories started to flow like blood in a low-grade slasher movie. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homemade Hallowe\u2019en costumes are sometimes the product of a creative imagination and personal ambition. More often than not, however, they are a product of lack of planning or a desire to save money. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/mobile\/lifestyle\/google-canada-reveals-2015-s-most-popular-halloween-costumes-1.2628410\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CTV shared some interesting statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just before Halloween last year: \u201cAbout 50 per cent of all searches for Halloween costumes and decorations typically come within five days of the event, according to Google Canada\u2019s figures.\u201d And \u201csearches for makeup have grown about 30 per cent over the past few years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So &#8230;the countdown is on! Halloween is just around the corner and it is time to get on top of costumes! And the big question is always \u2013 what to be!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many news outlets and costume sellers are talking about <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/09\/27\/halloween-2016-costume-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a shift in the top choice this year.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The \u2018princess\u2019 has been knocked out of her tower and replaced by super heroes. How unchivalrous! Fortune Magazine reported the top ten list of kids Halloween costumes this year, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Action\/Superhero<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Princess (knocked down from number one but not out completely!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal (Cat, Dog, Lion, Monkey, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Character<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars Character<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tie: Witch AND DC Superhero (excluding Batman)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen Character (Anna, Elsa, Olaf)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel Superhero (excluding Spiderman)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombie<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spiderman<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best news about this list? If you have left it late and the costumes shops are sold out, you can make some of these yourself and without dire consequences. If none of those costumes strikes you or your kid\u2019s fancy, look <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/style\/61-awesome-halloween-costume-ideas-its-not-too-late-steal-t2741\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online for ideas.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/m.huffpost.com\/ca\/entry\/4101022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many articles and sites with some pretty interesting and fun ideas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A few we particularly liked:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For adults: French Kiss (Kiss face make-up, striped shirt and beret and a baguette!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For mom and baby: Popcorn vendor (Mom is vendor\u2026 baby (with some crafty help) is popcorn!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For kids: Bat (using a black broken umbrella!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the entire family, without forgetting Nanny if she wants to join the fun: Scooby Doo and his gang<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendations for making \u201cthe making of the costume\u201d as painless as possible include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set a deadline for making the \u201cwhat to be\u201d decision. Enlist the help of your nanny or babysitter. They spend a lot of time talking with your kids and can be a great help in getting your kids to come to the final answer. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to the dollar store and\/ or craft store asap. Not only to do you want to ensure you get the supplies you need but you will likely discover you have to make another trip. This is much happier when you have given yourself time (i.e. not at two o\u2019clock in the morning the night before Halloween!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practice applying make-up a couple of times in advance of Halloween. Practice makes perfect and happy trick or treaters!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget to get your candy bowl sorted before the stores are out of all of the good stuff. The CTV report last year stated Skittles, M&amp;Ms and the classic candy corn as the top searches. \u00a0No tricks \u2013 all treats!
