Breakfast for Learning month: 5 ways to get your kids to start their day right

Categories: BabysitterReading Time: 2 minutes

September is Breakfast for Learning month so you have probably seen the slogans: “Eat Right to Be Bright” or “Children who eat well, learn well”. Not convinced? Studies have shown that kids who eat breakfast have better school attendance records, better behaviour in school and make better grades. Convinced but tired of fighting with your kids to get them to eat? Here are 5 ways to get your kids to eat breakfast:

 Get them up, get them active

A common complaint from kids is that they are not hungry. Get your kids to bed a little earlier and wake them up a little earlier. Get them to walk the dog or do some chores in the morning to get their bodies awake and their stomachs growling.

 Remove the stress

No one wants to eat when their mom is running around the kitchen grabbing this and throwing that. If you believe this is an important meal, plan for it. Make pancakes at the weekend and freeze them. Cut fruit or set the table the night before. Make it easier on yourself so everyone can enjoy a calm meal.

 Lead by example

Demonstrate how important you believe breakfast is by having a good breakfast yourself, preferably eating with them. By prepping the night before, you will give yourself the time to sit down with your kids.

 Make it a game

This is the old standby because it works! Give prizes to kids after they eat their breakfast a set number of times.

 Listen to your kids

Ask them what they like to eat; give them the job of introducing new foods to keep a good variety going. Be flexible – if one morning is tight because of a test or activity, plan for breakfast bars to eat in the car.

Eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner. This old saying is spot on; breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Get your kids off to the right start!
