Five Easy and Fun Earth Day Activities for Kids

Categories: BabysitterReading Time: 2 minutes

Earth Day is one of the most important days of the year. While we feel that our planet should be celebrated every day, April 22 is really like a birthday celebration for the Earth. Countries all across the globe participate in this biggest environmental-awareness day of the year. Let your children develop an interest in the world around them with some fun Earth day activities! Crafts, music and get-togethers are a great way to get kids interested in protecting the planet. After all, the children are the future and they’ll need to take better care of the Earth than previous generations did!

Plant trees and shrubs

Gather up all the kids in the neighbourhood and help them plant some trees or shrubs! You can get saplings from a local nursery to get them started. Kids will love planting their own backyard garden. Want to take this activity even further? Ask kids to name their tree and tell others about it! If you need help, grab a book on tree identification to give them a hand.

Switch off all lights for at least one hour

This is one of the simplest Earth Day activities for kids. Best of all, it doesn’t require a single tool or penny to do! Plan a time of day together, then turn off the lights for an hour. Make this activity even more fun by doing it at night and spending that hour under the starry sky. Tell stories, play games or just spend the hour chatting with your kids. It’s also a great opportunity to teach kids about how people lived before we had electricity.

Recycle

One of the best ways to protect our planet is to reduce, reuse and recycle. Collect discarded items from your recycling bin and try to come up with fun ways to re-purpose it into something new. Grocery bags, bottle caps, plastic bottles and more can be turned into fun new objects. Let your kids use their imagination to come up with exciting new ideas.

Earth Day Parade

Get your kids together with other families and organize an Earth Day parade in your neighbourhood. Let kids dress up in colourful clothing and make banners (out of recycled paper, of course) to celebrate the earth. Sing songs as you march down the street to grab attention.

Hold a garage sale

A garage sale is a great way to earn some extra money while passing on items you no longer use. Gather up all the old toys, gently used clothing and other household items that haven’t been used in a while. Head outside and set up tables to display your wares. When the garage sale is over, donate the items that didn’t sell to charity.

Earth is the only home we know. By teaching our children to care for it, we can ensure it survives for future generations. These great Earth Day activities for kids are the perfect way to help them develop a love of the planet at an early age.
